Laura • A One Day Bride
As the owner of women’s clothing store in Albert Park, Paloma Bleu, it was a sure thing that Laura’s wedding dress was going to be something spectacular. Laura worked with our team to create a custom designed gown that was fun and unique. Using hints of blue, pleated chiffon and beautiful textures Laura made the perfect One Day Bride.
Holding their reception at Carousel over looking Albert Park Lake, this couple created an intimate setting not to mention the three litre bottles of French Rosé which was Laura’s must have on the day!
BRIDE… Laura Williamson
GROOM… Josh Kannourakis
WEDDING DATE… 18/12/15
WHEN AND HOW WE MET
Josh went to primary school with our best man, Pat, who is one of my good friends from boarding school. After school I went to live in London and Josh and Pat went to college together. When I came back from London, Josh was a regular in my group and was friends with all my friends.
I think I was home from London two days and met Josh. We kissed the second time we met- the rest was history!
OUR WEDDING LOCATION
CEREMONY: St Joseph’s Church Port Melbourne
RECEPTION: Carousel- Food and Desire
We were married at St Joseph’s Church in Port Melbourne. We chose this venue for the stunning blue stone Church. We also wanted Father Bob Maguire to marry us and this is one of his Churches.
Our reception was at Carousel in Albert Park. Very local for both of us. I own Paloma Bleu in Albert Park and we used to live in Albert Park until recently we moved to Windsor. I drive through the lake, past Carousel twice a day and it was the perfect location for us to celebrate our wedding. We also really wanted an “indoor/outdoor” vibe for the wedding, and the deck at Carousel was perfect. Our photos were shot in St Vincent Gardens, which is just behind my store, so it meant a lot to keep it nice and local.
We are lucky to have Steph Hagan as one of our best friends. Steph worked at the Design Depot and the Big Group for many years but finished up at the end of 2015. Steph’s last job while working at the Design Depot was our wedding and she went out with a massive bang! She knows us so well, which made it so much fun to create the wedding of our dreams.
Going back to the indoor/outdoor theme, I wanted to create a space that people could enjoy outside all night as well as a stunning dining room and fun dance floor. I wanted to create three parts to the night; “pre drinks” on the deck with canapés, then moving into a “restaurant” vibe reception dinner then onto a crazy dance floor with Saxophonists, Bongo drums, a live rapper and DJ. Rutherford Entertainment did not disappoint and created such an amazing party! The floor plan of our dining room was amazing, it consisted of round, rectangle and square tables, all randomly placed, with completely different florals, crockery and table clothes on each table. Giving it the vibe of a restaurant instead of a wedding reception. Our bridal table had a Perspex mirror tabletop with the most amazing floral the whole way down the centre.
Outside on the deck was amazing, there was a five metre marble bar set up with couches and tables for guests to spend the night outside sipping their Mojitos, Aperol’s and of course Espresso Martinis.
THE BEST ADVICE I WAS GIVEN
The best advice I was given was to make sure I was busy the day before the wedding and to also stop and take a breath on the night and try and take it all in because it goes so fast!
WHAT WAS YOUR NON NEGOTIABLE FOR THE DAY?
Josh’s only non negotiable was to have Espresso Martini’s. Other than that he gave me free control! One of my big requests was that we serve three litre bottles of French Rosé for the pre drinks on the deck. This was perfect for such a hot day. Another one of my requests- the party must be extended to 1am and flowers, flowers, flowers!
I was very strict on what I wanted for my Hens Day! A lovely lunch somewhere that I can dress up and spend a lot of money on my outfit and definitely not be dressed up in a costume! My bridesmaids did not disappoint. We went to Fatto on South Bank and had a stunning lunch with lots of champagne. After we did Silent Disco up and down South Bank. Picture 30 girls with headphones on dancing and screaming the words to the songs that no one else can hear… very fun!
CELEBRANT: Father Bob Maguire
PHOTOGRAPHY: Dan Blumenthal
My friend Steph Hagan at the Design Depot said he was the best! I was not disappointed! Dan flew down from Sydney to shoot our wedding and Sonia from the Melbourne office was the second photographer. We are so, so thrilled with our photos.
VIDEO: C2- Marcus.
We chose our videpographer through word of mouth. We had been to a few weddings that C2 were shooting, again- Steph Hagan said Marcus was the best! We were so happy with our wedding video. It really captured what a fun day and night it was.
This was probably the quickest/easiest part!
I had set up many appointments to start the search for the dress and as planning on heading to Sydney to see some companies up there. My first stop was of course One Day Bridal. I think I tried on three dresses at One Day Bridal and knew straight away after chatting with Steph, that it had to be strapless and I wanted to create something crazy fun with Kyha. I left there with my sisters and my mum, got home, sat down for 5 minutes and called the girls at One Day, interrupting their busy night of appointments and said I couldn’t imagine going anywhere else. That was it! From there the fun began. I knew I wanted blue in the dress, but I did go to poor Kyha with about 8 different ideas in my head, that’s where she works her magic! Creating the perfect dress that I adored!
HAIR & MAKE UP
I am so lucky to have my friend Sarah Caporale as my hairdresser. Sarah knows my hair like her own. She has been colouring and cutting my hair for over 7 years. I had two make up artists on the day, given that I had six bridesmaids!! Sarah Tripp, is an old school friend and is so talented, Monica Gingold and I worked on a shoot for Paloma Bleu and I love her work.
SHOES: YSL Tributes, white!
I have these shoes in a purple that I have worn to so many weddings and done a few spring racing days in them. I know I can stand in them all day, they were so comfortable. They were so amazing with the dress, because of the pleated blue tulle under the dress, every time I walked, you could see the shoes. I loved that the whole shoe was white, including the platform. They looked amazing with the dress and I could dance all night in them.
JEWELLERY: My engagement ring, two wedding bands and diamond bracelet were all from Bensimon Diamonds in Crown.
I had six bridesmaids. Four of which were friends, and two were my sisters. All the bridesmaids dresses and jewellery and pyjama’s to get ready in were all sourced through my boutique Paloma Bleu. We all wore Masini & Chern white embroidered pyjamas to get ready in. The girls were all dressed in Camilla and Marc. My four friends were in the dresses and my two sisters were in the matching skirt and top- they were both pregnant! All the girls jewellery was by Sarah and Sebastian.
The guys were all in black tie Tuxedos. And shirts, and bow ties were by Hugo Boss, Crown.
Josh was dressed in an Ermenegildo Zegna Bespoke custom made tuxedo from the Collins Street store.
Flowers Vasette was our amazing florist. The floral ceiling above the dance floor at Carousel was stunning. I wanted mainly greenery in the roof with pops of purple wisteria. Outside on the bar and throughout the venue were huge Perspex vases of pink Dogwood. For the tables, I asked for bright, bold jewel colours of mainly peonies, hydrangeas. They were so stunning. Our bouquets were all white peonies, with my bouquet including a touch of light blue hydrangeas to tie in with my dress.
YOUR ADVICE FOR FUTURE BRIDES
My advice to future brides would be, make the most of every minute. Make sure you do something really fun the day before, so you’re not fussing about jobs! We went down to Aireys Inlet to A La Greque for a long lunch the day before with my family. It was a perfect thing to do to kick of the celebrations!
