One Day Bride • Ashleigh

Ashleigh and David’s wedding was timeless and beautiful. Held at the Abbotsford Convent admits a crowd of close friends and family.  The stunning bride dressed in lace and the handsome groom all suited up share a delicate moment together before the ceremony. It’s the stuff of fairy tales and this wedding had it all. And when you get an A-team of suppliers like this one you know it’s going to be an epic wedding.

BRIDE… Ashleigh

GROOM… David

WEDDING DATE… 08/08/15

WHEN AND HOW WE MET

David and I met over nine years ago at a party and started dating shortly after. Toward the end of 2013 we took a trip to Europe and it was on this holiday that David proposed. One evening when we were staying in Paris I was surprised (and a little suspicious) to come home to our apartment and find the room filled with red roses and candles. Dave then made us the most delicious dinner, and I spent the whole meal waiting for him to propose! No ring appeared during dinner so, with me feeling a little dejected, we went for a walk. Just as I had forgotten about the idea of a Parisian proposal, he got down on one knee and proposed on a dimly-lit cobblestone street near our apartment with a view of Notre Dame – it came as a complete surprise!

OUR WEDDING LOCATION

Abbotsford Convent ticked all the boxes – not only is it a stunning venue with an old-world feel, we could have photos, ceremony, and reception all in one place. Meeting the amazing staff at Bursaria who look after this venue sealed the deal.

STYLE CONCEPT

Our wedding didn’t have a strong theme, but we did want to create a moody, wintry, romantic vibe. Our venue was beautiful and in keeping with this theme to begin with, so that gave us a good head start. What really brought everything together in terms of styling were the incredible florals by Prunella – especially the wrought-iron screen embellished with blooms that served as a ceremony backdrop, and the hanging installation in the reception space. The floral chandelier was such a showstopper!

THE BEST ADVICE I WAS GIVEN

Do a “first look”! Both our photographer and our Event Manager had recently been married, and they had both spent the day with their grooms before the ceremony. When they initially suggested this to us I was hesitant, but the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. We are not a particularly traditional couple, we wanted to focus on having a relaxed and fun day, and we wanted the ceremony to flow into the reception with a relatively short break. So, we decided to do a first look and get our photos out of the way before the ceremony. As it turned out this worked perfectly for us, and our first look is one of my favourite moments from the day. Seeing him calmed my nerves instantly, and we were able to savour excitement and emotion of seeing one another all dressed up and ready for the wedding. It was a really special moment for just the two of us, and I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

WHAT WAS YOUR NON NEGOTIABLE FOR THE DAY?

The food and wine! David wanted to have extensive input into these elements, and Bursaria were very accommodating.

HENS DAY

We went to a winery for lunch, then to a friend’s beach house for dinner, drinks, and a grown-up sleepover!

CEREMONY: Abbotsford Convent (with Event Management and Catering by Bursaria

CELEBRANT: Charlotte Cels (personal friend)

PHOTOGRAPHY: Tess Follett

We were lucky that Tess is David’s best man’s sister. We definitely didn’t choose her solely due to this though, we had been following her work for a long time, and we loved her style.

VIDEO: Purple Ribbon

Again, we were lucky – Dave’s best man is with Purple Ribbon! We also did not choose this by default though. Purple Ribbon do amazing work.

THE DRESS

I knew I wanted something classic that I could look back on in 50 years and still love. I definitely wanted beautiful lace and long sleeves, and didn’t find any off-the-rack styles that fit the bill so I started looking into custom made gowns. I was drawn to One Day Bridal due to the service, the quality, and the timeless yet fashion-forward aesthetic.

HAIR & MAKE UP: Monica Gingold did my hair and makeup – she was wonderful, I can’t recommend her highly enough.

SHOES

My shoes were Jimmy Choo, and I found them in the boutique at Chadstone. They were perfect with the dress, not too high, and incredibly comfortable!

BRIDESMAIDS

I had three bridesmaids. I found their dress in the window of Kookai one day on my lunch break! I was not expecting to find the bridesmaids’ dresses there, but they were perfect – the colour looked beautiful, and it was a perfect stretchy style for my pregnant bridesmaid!

GROOMSMEN

David’s suit was by Oscar Hunt

The groomsmen went to MJ Bale for theirs.

FLOWERS: Prunella

We really wanted the flowers to set the scene, and we absolutely loved Prunella’s aesthetic. Vanessa and Caris are just so talented, so we just gave them some guidance in terms of colour and some reference pics (overgrown looking, deep plums and pinks with hints of blush and lots of dark greenery), and told them to create whatever they wanted! We were over the moon with the result.

YOUR ADVICE FOR FUTURE BRIDES

It’s a cliché, but don’t forget to have fun in the lead up to the wedding. It can be challenging, but it is such a special time – keep it all in perspective and focus on what is important: you’re marrying the love of your life! Also, feel free to pick and choose the traditions and “rules” you adhere to. It should be all about the two of you – do what makes you happy and what feels right for you as a couple.
