Jessica • A One Day Bride

Jessica and Dane were married overlooking the beautiful Brisbane River with friends and family close by their side. Choosing to focus on the basics, Jessica found this helped with the planning processes as everything else fell into place. Choosing a sleek custom designed One Day Gown accompanied by a sheath veil and timeless peonies Jessica made a perfect bride.

BRIDE… Jessica Grimley

GROOM… Dane Curtain

WEDDING DATE… 15.11.15

I first met Dane at a grade ten party! We spent five years as good mates before dating.

We chose to be married at St Stephens’s cathedral in Brisbane City. Ever since I started working in the city I fell in love with the cathedral. I would always walk past every morning on my way to work. This cathedral has great significance to both Dane and I. My Nonna and Nonno were married at St Stephens sixty years ago this coming December. Danes sister was also married there nine years ago.
Our reception was held at Pony on Eagle Street Pier, which is located right on the Brisbane river with stunning views of the Story Bridge. Dane and I weren’t huge fans of a wedding hall. We wanted something that best suited our style and theme. Pony ticked all the boxes.

The theme of the wedding was clean, simple, and modern with a rustic twist. We achieved this by going with what we loved! Dane loves a rustic feel which Pony delivers and I love the modern look so the styles combined worked extremely well! We didn’t need a stylist as Pony being a restaurant delivered exactly what we were after. It was our dream wedding. Part of Pony’s function offering is our very own wedding co-ordinator, her name is Emma and she was unbelievable!

I’m definitely not your typical gen-x. I don’t have Instagram or follow any blogs! I just always had a good idea of what I wanted. I just knew the basics and I wanted to do them right. That’s why when I met with One Day Bridal, I knew straight away I was in safe hands and trusted the amazing team to design the dress of my dreams.

The best advice I was given was – do the basics, do them right! And everything will be perfect! I took this advice on board and not once did I stress over the planning. I enjoyed the entire process and didn’t go overboard with extra things that didn’t matter.

To be honest, we were very relaxed and went with the flow so negotiating was almost relevant for every stage of the planning. The only thing I can think of was all of our guests standing around the dance floor whilst Dane and I gave our speeches. This wasn’t typical at a wedding, usually (so I’ve been told) the bride and groom stand-up whilst everyone is still seated to give their speech. Dane and I wanted a more intimate feel so we had everyone gather round whilst standing for speeches, cutting of the cake and dances. The other non-negotiable was having our parents, siblings and grandparents all sit with us on the one table, this was magical!

My Hens day consisted of my three bridesmaids and mums (all family) and a flight to Melbourne for a three day event!
We had my second dress fitting at One Day Bridal which was always a treat seeing the ladies and the progress of the dress! We had a few nights out, including a beautiful dinner which followed by a male review show. Another night was spent watching an AFL match which was also great fun!

I was lucky enough to also have a beautiful lunch followed by drinks with my extended family and friends back up here in Brisbane! It was a stunning day.

CEREMONY: St Stephens Cathedral

RECEPTION: Pony, Brisbane

One night I happened to stumble across these amazing photos whilst searching for wedding venues. This was at the very start of the process, so eighteen months prior to the wedding. Dane and I instantly fell in love with the photographer. I found out that he was Brisbane based then caught up with him. He was the only photographer we met with. We locked him in straight away! His wife Alyda also works with Todd! They are both incredible human begins.

Dane and I were not 100% convinced we would have a videographer, we were obviously watching our budget so wanted to keep costs down. I was referred to Brad and Kate (husband and wife) by my mate at work. They were just in the middle of setting up their own business. Once again, we met Brad and Kate and instantly knew we wanted them. As with Todd and Alyda, we never shopped around, we just knew when we met them face to face that is who we wanted to capture our special day. And that’s exactly what they did.

My first appointment with One Day Bridal was to discuss certain styles of designs I like. From then I tried on four different style gowns and we discussed what complimented by body shape the best. I had no doubt One Day would design me the most perfect gown that suited me 100%. From then our fittings consisted of AMAZING ideas, champagne and great chats with great company!

I have been a client of Rixon in Brisbane CBD for eight years. There was definitely no doubt that they were going to be my hair stylist on my wedding day. They offered the whole salon to my bridesmaids and I for the entire morning, just us. It was truly the best time of my life. My sister created a great playlist, my dad dropped off amazing food and we had the whole place to ourselves. My beautiful mum was there also getting ready with us which topped it off! My makeup artist also came to the salon and that’s where she made us beautiful! Nelle did my makeup for my bridal shower three weeks earlier and absolutely nailed it! She did an AMAZING job and I recommend her to everyone I know! She is such a beautiful person.

I knew exactly the style I was after. I wanted a classic shoe but with something extra.
I fell in love with the first pair of shoes I tried on which were Stuart Weitzman, The Nudist Sandal.
The colour was platinum noir which was a gold tone.

I had my sister and two cousins as my bridesmaids, we are all very close. I found the bridesmaids pieces the hardest to find. I think out of the whole wedding these were the hardest to get right, especially when you are dressing three people. Manning Cartel was where we initially starting searching as they always have great pieces. In the back of my mind I could visualise tops and skirts in whites/nude tones. That’s exactly what we found at Manning Cartel! And they went perfectly with my dress, it all fell into place. The girls looked absolutely breathtaking.

The boys bought their suits at Michael Innes, a menswear store in West End, Brisbane. That in itself was an amazing experience. The ladies who run the store are divine and their father is the tailor who gets it right every time.

The florist we selected was Bouquet Boutique located in New Farm, Brisbane.
I was extremely lucky to work with Geraldine who knew exactly what I wanted. I was also lucky that our wedding was in middle of November which is prime time for peonies. I wanted to keep a clean feel, white with heaps of greenery and peonies were the perfect flower! We added magnolia leaves which worked perfectly with the rustic theme also.

Keep it simple and focus on getting the basics right. Don’t get too overwhelmed and just enjoy the day.
